Recycled Craft: T-Shirt Necklaces

I saw this great idea on the Martha Stewart show and immediately went out to thrift stores in search of cotton t-shirts.  It was really interesting to find out that not many t-shirts are made from 100% cotton.  In fact, I had a pretty difficult time finding them.  After visiting a few different stores and reading a lot of labels, I eventually came across some - including organic cotton shirts from American Apparel!

Tools and Materials:

100% cotton T-shirt
Ruler
Rotary cutter

I didn't take any pictures while making them so I will just use what Martha has posted on her site.

T-Shirt Necklace Directions:

1. Lay the shirt on a flat surface; cut off the hem and discard. Cut the body of the shirt horizontally into strips approximately 3/4 of an inch long. (They will actually be loops.)

2. One at a time, pull the loops open and stretch until the fabric starts to curl. Stack the loops on top of one another so that all the T-shirt side seams are in the same spot.

3. Once you have the thickness you desire, wrap the seams with a scrap piece of fabric (about 6 inches long) from the same shirt. Tuck the end of the scrap under itself and stitch closed to make more secure.

Perhaps you may find one in your Christmas stocking this year!

  1. Hmm.. I tried this a few months ago. And I think my problem was that my t-shirt wasn't 100% cotton. Because yours looks a lot better than mine did!

  2. One of my students made me one of these last year as a gift. I love it! It's remarkable how it is so stylish and so cheap and easy to make.
